Student Portfolio Reviews
Students interested in pursuing visual arts in college will have the unique opportunity to receive personalized feedback from college-level art and design faculty, professional artists and designers, and industry experts. These reviews are designed to help students:
-
Build confidence when speaking about their artwork
-
Strengthen presentation and communication skills
-
Understand how to make their portfolio stand out in competitive creative fields
-
Gain insight into industry expectations and best practices
How it Works:
-
Students will pre-register for one of the designated Portfolio Review Sessions during the 2026 Long Island Media Arts Show conference.
-
At the session, students may meet with one or several reviewers from higher education, studio practice, and creative industries.
-
Reviews are conversational and supportive, focusing on strengths, growth areas, and effective presentation.
-
Each review lasts approximately 5–10 minutes, depending on the session format.
Portfolio Submissions Guidelines:
Physical Portfolios:
Students presenting a physical portfolio should prepare:
-
12–15 of your strongest works, showcasing a range of skills, media, and ideas.
-
Artwork may be displayed in a bound portfolio book, portfolio case, or as mounted/protected loose works.
-
Students are encouraged to bring sketchbooks or process journals.
-
Any digital work may be included but must be viewable on a laptop or tablet.
Tips:
-
Organize work in a purposeful order.
-
Label pieces clearly.
-
Avoid oversized or fragile pieces unless needed.
Digital Portfolios:
Digital portfolios must be viewing-ready on a laptop or tablet (phones discouraged). Prepare 12–15 pieces in a folder, scrollable PDF, presentation, or website.

Tips:
-
Ensure all files open without internet.
-
Keep layouts simple.
-
Test device brightness and navigation before the session.
Motion Graphics, Animation + Film
Students presenting time-based media should prepare a curated 3–5-minute reel or individual works with timestamps, all preloaded for smooth playback.
Tips:
-
Begin with your strongest piece.
-
Ensure playback works without issues.
-
Include optional supporting materials like storyboards or concept art.
General Tips for a Successful Review:
-
Practice discussing your artwork.
-
Bring a notebook for feedback.
-
Ask questions.
-
Present yourself professionally but comfortably.
Portfolio Drop-Off & Responsibility Notice:
Students who prefer not to carry their physical portfolios throughout the day may drop them off at the designated Portfolio Review Room at the start of the conference for safekeeping. All items must be picked up before the end of the event.
Please note that laptops, tablets, and any other electronic devices should remain with the student at all times and may not be left in the Portfolio Review Room. Five Towns College and the LIMAS Conference are not responsible for storing, monitoring, or replacing any portfolios, devices, or materials that are left behind, forgotten, or unclaimed.
